Stone Sculpture

Working primarily in dense serpentines, marbles, and granite, Jack's modern abstract stone sculptures draw inspiration from birdlife, aquatic creatures, and the natural environment. Each piece is hand-carved and meticulously polished to a fine hone, with natural colour, tactile surfaces, and flowing lines. Commissions are welcome, with pieces available in a range of sizes.

Photography

Shot on location across New Zealand and beyond, Jack's large scale photographs are printed on premium canvas or fine art paper and framed in natural recycled timber. Bold in scale and rich in detail, these striking works are designed to make an impact - whether hung in a home, office, or commercial space. Each piece is a limited edition, making them as collectible as they are beautiful.

The Wings of Stone Collection

Hand-carved in a variety of stones and polished to a fine hone, Jack's small stone birds capture the charm and character of New Zealand's beloved birdlife. From the curious fantail to the iconic kiwi, each bird is finished with delicate metal legs and feet- making them a perfect gift or a beautiful addition to any home.

Native Ceramic Birds

Bright, bold and full of personality, Jack's ceramic birds are hand-glazed in rich jewel tones and perched on little wooden plinths. Inspired by New Zealand's native birdlife - from the tūī to the kea - each one is a characterful, collectible piece that looks equally at home on a windowsill or a bookshelf. Impossible to walk past without smiling.

HELLO

I’m Jack Stobart, a Zimbabwean born, New Zealand stone sculptor living in Arrowtown, New Zealand. I come from a family of artists with my mother, Louise Stobart being a renown metal sculptor and designer who along with her husband Bruce, founded Birdwoods Gallery in Havelock North in 2004...

Sculpture FAQ

  • Jack regularly freights both sculptures and canvases around the world, each sculpture will have a wooden crate specifically built. The crates will be treated for international travel and marked accordingly, the sculptures will then be carefully packed with compressed paper for their journey. The crates are palleted so a forklift is required to move them unless they are small. Over the years, Jack has successfully shipped hundreds of sculptural works internationally with next to no damage. Sculpture shipping is done on a case-by-case basis and installation, insurance and freight advice will be given upon order. Canvases being sent internationally will be sent in a roll. For larger installations, Jack typically prefers to oversee the installation himself where possible.

  • For custom works and commissions sculptures, the lead time is typically 8-12 months. The timeframe depends on the scale, material and complexity of the work required. Many of the rocks such as marble, granite and quartz that Jack prefers to work with are sourced from outside New Zealand and shipping time needs to be factored in.  Art Photographs are printed to order so allow a month with stretching and framing. Jack will give a more detailed time frame upon ordering.

  • For stone sculptures, the process changes depending on the scale and stone type being used. For larger works, a clay model is created in conjunction with the client if the work has been commissioned. Once the design, stone type and scale have been finalised, Jack ventures to the required stone mine and sources a rock suitable for the work (Jack uses different mines across the world depending on the desired stone) once a stone has been sourced, Jack then uses a variety of modern and traditional stone carving tools such as grinders and pneumatic chisels to rough out the stone according to the design, once a rough out has been completed, the stone gets slowly refined and carefully polished to a hone. More information on the stone carving process can be found in the 'About' Section

  • The price of the sculpture varies depending on the stone type used, the complexity of the piece, the scale and of course the number of hours required to create the work. Harder stones typically require more work to sculpt so will demand a higher price. Jack is happy to give quotes on request.
