Jack Stobart is a New Zealand based stone sculptor. Jack primarily works with dense Serpentines, Marbles and Granite as well as other semi-precious rocks. Jack works on a variety of subject matter and typically creates pieces on a commission basis. Jack draws the majority of his inspiration from birdlife and aquatic creatures and uses a combination of these and designs from the natural environment as inspiration for his modern abstract works. With their natural colour, tactile surface and flowing lines, these hand-carved sculptures will add a graceful focal point to your home or garden.

SCULPTURE FAQ
-
Jack regularly freights sculptures and around the world, each sculpture will have a wooden crate specifically built. The crates will be treated for international travel and marked accordingly, the sculptures will then be carefully packed with compressed paper for their journey. The crates are palleted so a forklift is required to move them unless they are small. Over the years, Jack has successfully shipped hundreds of sculptural works internationally with next to no damage. Sculpture shipping is done on a case-by-case basis and installation, insurance and freight advice will be given upon order. For larger installations, Jack typically prefers to oversee the installation himself where possible.
-
For custom works and commissions sculptures, the lead time is typically 8-12 months. The timeframe depends on the scale, material and complexity of the work required. Many of the rocks such as marble, granite and quartz that Jack prefers to work with are sourced from outside New Zealand and shipping time needs to be factored in. Jack will give a more detailed time frame upon ordering.
-
Forsculptures, the process changes depending on the scale and stone type being used. For larger works, a clay model is created in conjunction with the client if the work has been commissioned. Once the design, stone type and scale have been finalised, Jack ventures to the required stone mine and sources a rock suitable for the work (Jack uses different mines across the world depending on the desired stone) once a stone has been sourced, Jack then uses a variety of modern and traditional stone carving tools such as grinders and pneumatic chisels to rough out the stone according to the design, once a rough out has been completed, the stone gets slowly refined and carefully polished to a hone.
-
The price of the sculpture varies depending on the stone type used, the complexity of the piece, the scale and of course the number of hours required to create the work. Harder stones typically require more work to sculpt so will demand a higher price. Jack is happy to give quotes on request.
Choose Your Stone
Stone comes in many different forms, not each rock is suitable for carving and each stone type produces different colours and finishes. Jack primarily chooses to work with a selection of dense Serpentines, Marbles, Granites and other harder semi-precious stones. Each stone has unique carving qualities and choosing a stone depends largely on the design wanted. Jack will walk you through your different colour options and finishes and what stone type is most suitable for the sculpture you have in mind.
